Laser Plastic Welding at K-Trade Fair 2016

Leister Give Away Magnifying Glass

Leister Corporate, Leister Technologies, Laser Plastic Welding

The Laser Plastic Welding business unit of Leister Technologies AG is presenting the latest laser technology products and processes at the shared Leister exhibition stand at Hall 11, Booth D 22.

Plastic welding using lasers has firmly established itself in the market as a viable production method, which has caused many laser welding companies to focus their developments solely on their developments on optimizing the system and tools and less on the process. Leister is dedicated to the further development of all aspects of laser welding plastics.

During the K trade fair, Leister will present new tools based on their laser delivery optics. The tools consists of two base optics (BT and AT) which allow different beam shaping modules to be easily attached. These beam shaping modules shape the laser light into points, rings, lines, and fields. The BT (base technology) optics consist solely of optical elements, while the AT (advanced technology) optics allow for monitoring of the process with electronic components. Thus, a wide variety of processes can be modeled with both optics. Leister offers other optics in addition to this optics concept. Therefore, it is the largest supplier of processes and process versions from which customers can choose the optimum process for their application.

The optics and laser source are the core of a laser welding system. However, the layout depends on the production conditions and the component to be welded. That is why Leister is presenting not one but two manual workstations (TTS and WS-AT) at K fair, differing in size and performance. The NOVOLAS TTS equipped with BT optics is a compact tabletop system. During the trade fair, customers will have the opportunity to use it for welding their own magnifying glasses which they can take with them. The TTS is an example of an integration solution using the Basic AT systems. The Basic AT systems are designed for integration and consist of a laser system, optics and process software. The operation cell of the TTS can be set up separately from the Basic AT system and is controlled by a PLC that allows the operation cell and the Basic AT system to communicate with each other.

A NOVOLAS WS-AT will be displayed combining two laser welding processes, GLOBO welding and the Through Heating Method. The through heating method allows laser transparent films to be heated via an additional laser absorbing component that is positioned under the films. The laser energy is transformed into heat by this absorbent layer and heats the films positioned above it. Then the laser transmissive layers are joined together under pressure. The glass sphere of the GLOBO optics, riding on an air bearing, serves as the pressing tool and final optical element. The sphere is guided along the configured contour by an axis system. Various welding contours illustrate the flexibility of the overall process regarding welding seam design and component exchange. The inflated end product to take with you proves the excellent strength of the welds – a balloon for everyone.
