Sapin chooses Leister for the heat treatment of fire-fighting pipes
Sapin is a dynamic industrial company based just outside Milan, active for almost half a century in the production of fire fighting pipes, a segment in which it has gained a leading position in Italy and of the utmost importance at European level.
Sapin water handling products are typically used in emergency situations: reliability is therefore vital. For this reason, the attention to quality and efficiency of the processes have always characterized the company's production.
A complete range for industrial applications
Sapin's range of pipes is very wide and includes solutions for intensive use, mainly aimed at firefighters and civil protection. Unlike the classic pipes in homes and blocks of flats, for which it is reasonable to hope for at least infrequent use, in these cases the use is almost daily: the pipes must therefore correspond to much higher quality standards. Sapin pipes perfectly meet the requirements, in accordance with the main international regulations and the standards of petrochemical companies for class 2 pipes.
Two ovens for drying PVA
Intensive use pipes must be able to withstand abrasion caused by dragging on the ground and water hammering: they are expected to remain fully functional after more than 200 uses. To ensure this durability, heavy-duty pipes require a coating with special nitrile compounds. This is achieved by drying the PVA compound directly above the hose, subjecting the hose to two heat treatments in two separate ovens: a thermal shock with infrared heaters is followed by two drying ovens, with a first open module and a second with air recirculation. In both Sapin has inserted the Leister heaters, which can be perfectly integrated with the other components of the system (thermostat, PLC) and with the external carpentry. In particular, the chosen model, on Leister's advice, from the wide range of solutions available, is the LE 10,000 DF 11 KW heater combined with the ASO blower. This configuration allowed it to fit into an existing oven, replacing other heating technology with very limited modifications. The installed solution works in the second closed-circuit furnace, recirculating the furnace air and heating it just enough to maintain an internal temperature of about 110°-120°. The LE 10.000 heater works at maximum power during the ignition phase of the oven and, once the set temperature has been reached, it guarantees its maintenance, through the thermo-regulation developed ad hoc, with the minimum expenditure of energy. The ASO blower responds well to these conditions of use with air at room temperature > T, being designed to work with intake air temperatures up to Tmax=200°C.
A successful partnership
Sapin had no hesitation in choosing the supplier, having already used Leister heaters for a drying oven for high tenacity polyester yarn (PES HT): the yarn reels must be slightly dried in order to maintain the right twisting (twisting). The Leister products served their purpose very well, which led Sapin to choose them for the PVA drying oven as well.
Of the Leister solutions, Sapin appreciated the reliability, versatility and above all the energy efficiency, much greater than the previous heaters that had been present in the company for a few years. A consultation with Leister staff established that heaters with the same resistance, considered to be more efficient, would be oversized: the current solution allows energy savings of close to 50%.
Service and advice
Sapin has also been able to appreciate Leister's timely and correct after-sales service, which has taken full responsibility for the fine tuning operations carried out after installation, bringing the plant to full efficiency in a short time.
"We were completely satisfied with this collaboration with Leister, as with the previous ones, and we are confident that also in the future this supplier will be able to meet our expectations," said Dr. Francesco Chevallard, Sales Manager of the company.
With this installation Sapin joins the already large list of successful companies that have used Leister as a partner for the Process Heat, appreciating the quality of the products and the professionalism of the operators.
