Sealing Swimming Pools

Two welding methods are used to seal swimming pools lined with foil: overlap welding and butt welding. Choosing the right welding method is crucial for tightness, appearance, feel, and durability. Leister offers welding solutions for durable and visually appealing results.

Butt Welding

Butt welding is the ideal method for welding textured and printed swimming pool membranes with a thickness of 1.5 mm to 2 mm. This procedure is used for lining the pelvic floor. Two PVC membranes are butted together and welded with a seam tape underneath. To achieve a level surface on the basin floor, an antibacterial fleece is laid to the left and right of the seam tape to compensate for the difference in height. Suitable Leister device for this application: UNIDRIVE 505.

Advantages of butt welding:

Invisible weld seams (particularly important when using printed or textured design membranes)
No noticeable edges – makes cleaning easier
consistent welding pattern
Pool builders can work much faster with the UNIDRIVE 505 semi-automatic welding machine than with manual welding equipment.
Better working ergonomics compared to welding with a handheld device

Overlap Welding

The PVC pool liner is welded with an overlap of approx. 50 mm. The upper web is stapled by hand at specific points and can then be welded to the lower web. The overlap has a rather negative effect on aesthetics, comfort, and ease of cleaning. This is because a noticeable edge is created where dirt can accumulate. In addition, light irradiation often leads to visible shadow casting. Leister devices for this application: UNIROOF 300, UNIDRIVE 500.

Advantages of overlap welding:

Efficient, as it can be executed largely automatically
Overlap allows for small dimensional differences.
