The Principle of Laser Welding

In laser welding of thermoplastics, a transparent and an absorbing joining partner (plastic) are joined together.

When laser welding thermoplastics, two pieces of material are joined together using heat from a laser optic In the process, the absorbent material plasticizes and fuses with the transparent plastic. Heat conduction provides the necessary energy to bond together the transparent plastic. During the welding process both components are mechanically pressed together. The local heating and expansion creates the internal joining pressure. Internal and external joining pressure ensure that the two parts are firmly welded together.
